Deputy suspended following conviction
By Staff writer

REDWOOD CITY--A San Francisco deputy sheriff has been suspended without pay following his conviction for beating an inmate with a broomstick in the San Bruno Jail, the Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.

Richard Segovia, 31, was found guilty last week of assault and battery by a peace officer, misdemeanors that each carry a maximum sentence of one year in prison.

Segovia will remain suspended without pay until an internal investigation has been completed, sheriff's spokeswoman Eileen Hirst said.

The Sheriff's Department initiated an earlier internal investigation when George Varela, 31, of San Francisco, the prisoner whom Segovia beat in a booking room of the San Bruno Jail on April 26, 2002, lodged a complaint.

During the trial, witnesses testified that the attack was preceded by a remark Varela made to Segovia, which led to a shouting match.

Prosecutors said Segovia grabbed a broomstick and hit Varela until the wood shattered. Sandra Benson, Segovia's attorney, said Varela had grabbed the broomstick first, and her client used it in self-defense, raising a welt but not breaking the skin or causing any internal injuries.
